Chinese dishes with the American twist
Chinese buffet restaurants may serve food that is modified to suit American tastes.
Here are some of the most popular Americanized dishes.
Egg drop soup
A soup that has a chicken broth base mixed with scrambled egg. This is often served with noodles.
Egg foo yung
Also known as egg foo young or egg foo yaung. This dish is basically an egg omelet with meat and vegetable filling. A brown sauce is also served.
Egg roll
This is another very popular dish. The main difference between the traditional Chinese dish and the American version is in the skin - the latter normally has thin crispy skin while the former has a thicker covering.
Moo shu pork
This is more popular in the U.S. than in China, actually. The American version uses thicker pancakes and more American vegetables.
Fried rice
Definitely a staple in Chinese buffets. Rice made the day before and cooled over night is usually what is used for fried rice. Different restaurants may have different variations.
Kung pao chicken
The main difference between the Chinese dish and Americanized version is that the latter is toned down a bit in spiciness.
